Book Pick For The Month Of May : EFURU by Flora Nwapa May 9, 2018 – Posted in: Efuru – Tags: African Literature, Book Club, Culture, Feminist, Flora Nwapa, Igbo, Lifestyle, Traditions
We are super pumped about our Book for the month of May. For a long time we’ve been reading a lot of contemporary African literature with settings in Lagos – we just finished reading CARNIVOROUS CITY and NIGHT OF A CREAKING BED by TONI KAN – and so we thought why not do a throw back with an African Classic?
We noticed a lot of young Nigerians haven’t read EFURU or know little about Flora Nwapa and so we had to do it for the culture.
Efuru is set in a small Riverine Igbo town of Southeastern Nigeria during colonial times. The heroine, Efuru is a beautiful, gifted, industrious and Kind woman whose merits contradict some of her society’s gender norms and expectations. Efuru’s story closely portrays the life and times of a rural African woman, her words, thoughts, deeds, dreams, sufferings, talents, goals, desires, achievements and potentials.
We can’t wait to begin this!
Have you read EFURU? When did you read it? How did it make you feel? Can you share some of your thoughts with us?
